The theory behind my work is that if structure plays out long enough, it will appear to be chance. It won‘t be chance, it will only appear to be chance. My life flows as all things in the universe flow, in a cyclical or circular manner. It is as in Lobachevskian geometry, the continuum meets itself in space. The beginning and ending are only one step away from each other. There is no beginning and ending … in the universe. To live for all time, is to live now. My life‘s duration is all time...
- Channa Horwitz
The evening will include a performance of Poem Opera for 8 and three interpretations of Horwitz's Sonakinetography #3, one for a dance and light show choreographed by Horwitz's daughter Ellen Davis, one for piano by Maria Moraru, and one by percussionists Corey Fogel and Scott Higgins.
Please note that this is a performance installation and there will be no seating - observers are welcome to walk through the installation as it's being performed. Seats will be available in an adjacent room for rest and contemplation. The performances repeat once and there is no set entrance time for guests.
Channa Horwitz was born and raised in Los Angeles, and received degrees from Cal State Northridge and Cal Arts. Current exhibition: "Falling off a Cliff" at Francois Ghebaly Gallery. Recent exhibitions include a solo at Aanant & Zoo, Berlin, and FRIEZE Frame in London. She will be having an upcoming retrospective exhibition at the Kunsthalle Dresden in the fall of 2012. Over the past 50 years, Horwitz has created a visual philosophy drawn from a need to control and compose time through her drawing and painting. Using graphs as the basis for this description of time where one inch equals one beat, her work references dance notation but extends into a visual language parallel and separate to bodies in space. The cornerstone of this quest lies in her series of works titled “Sonakinetography”, drawings that can be validly expressed through multiple practices, including dance performance, musical composition and installation, solo, or with collaborators, and interpreters. What looks like a rigid geometric grid structure, with assigned numbers and linear logic, becomes a fertile ground for sound, rhythm, and dance, an open-source code language that allows perpetual change and arrangement.
Former owner-director of Rozann-Zimmerman Ballet Center in Los Angeles, Ellen Davis danced with the Stuttgart Ballet Company and was a Ford Foundation scholarship student at the School of American Ballet in N.Y.C. Davis has been teaching ballet and improvisational dance for thirty-five years. Expressing through a new learning and teaching paradigm, she founded “Yoga of Ballet”: classical ballet taught with a yogic approach. She has performed, choreographed and improvised works in the United States, Europe, and Asia, and most recently guided the building of the first ballet studio in Chandigarh, India. She is currently an adjunct faculty member at Pasadena City College, and the author of God's Echo and Breathing Eternity Waves into Time. Davis is Channa Horwitz's daughter. She last collaborated with her, conceiving the poetry soundtrack and choreography for At the Tone, a performance piece from Horwitz's Black and White Circle and Square series, which was performed in Potsdam, Germany.
Corey Fogel is a drummer and performance artist currently living in Los Angeles, CA. Corey performs and composes in many rock, jazz, noise, folk, and chamber music capacities. His solo work is based around improvisational encounters with sounds, objects, personalities, textiles, foods, spanning the disciplines of performance art, video, dance, and installation. Corey earned his Bachelors of Music in Jazz Performance and Percussion from Arizona State University in 2001, and his Master of Fine Arts in Integrated Media from The California Institute of the Arts in 2004. He has studied, recorded and performed with such artists as Tony Malaby, John Jesurun, Willie Winant, George Lewis, Mark Dresser, John Russell, Dominique Leone, Jacob Koller, and bands Gowns, Cryptacize, Missincinatti, Learning Music, The Mae Shi, Barbez, and The Mountain Goats. In addition to many national and international tours, Corey has presented work at Machine Project, LACMA, Sea & Space Explorations, UCSD, and REDCAT.
This evening's performance installation is supported by the California/International Art Foundation (C/IAF) and François Ghebaly Gallery. Presented as part of the Live Performance section of Pacific Standard Time, an initiative of the Getty whose presenting sponsor is Bank of America. Special Thanks to Lyn Kienholz.
